INTRODUCTION
This multi-site Design Idea Competition seeks global architectural design concepts to preserve the Africatown community, interpret its unique history and promote its future economic revitalization. The Competition leverages the spectacular discovery of the sunken Clotilda slave ship in the Mobile River Delta to tell the Africatown story on 16 sites in 4 venues across 3 cities.
The result is a major cultural heritage destination system for the Mobile, Alabama, region called
THE AFRICATOWN CULTURAL MILE (TM)

“AfricaTown enshrines and preserves the indomitable spirit of our ancestors. That it continues to exist validates the genius of its builders, the embodiment of their West African spirituality, intelligence, and skills. Thus, AfricaTown is an American ode to Africa, a symbol of resiliency in the face of slavery’s treachery. AfricaTown is an example of community-building in the 19th century, and it is a blueprint for revitalization in the 21st century.”

WHY africatown?
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]oday, visitors can get a glimpse of this history by visiting the downtown Museum of Mobile or by following the African-American Heritage Trail to the historic Africatown cemetery site. Some residents also stage an annual Africatown folk festival. Africatown is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But there’s no major public interpretive history initiative in Africatown — no replica of the Clotilda, no well-funded museum — no well-designed destination to mark Africatown’s role in Alabama, national and international history.

Organize a variety of ideas and sites to give visitors fresh visual messages
Connect 4 sites/16 buildings within 10 mile area to create 1st class destination
Create a heritage blueprint for future collaboration and economic development

So NOW, what’s the story?
In 2019, Clotilda the Slave Ship was ‘discovered’ in Mobile Bay. Now, there is international interest in this unique American place built by Africans at the end of the civil war…
This is a tale of American slavery, 2 southern cities, 1 town, and many many African descendants….

DESIGN THE BUILDINGS
THE AFRICATOWN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN IDEA COMPETITION is a design idea challenge that encourages participants to experiment with the sources, values and principles of African design and architecture within Africatown, Alabama, a unique African-American community established by once-enslaved West Africans who, once emancipated, bought land, built houses, churches and schools, and raised families immediately after the American Civil War. Numerous building requirements and cases studies are shared through this website to expand participant imagination.
The jury may choose to reward projects that show a high degree of creativity, even if they breach any of the rules, as long as it’s justified in the required written essay.
